Self-Help Resources

The Napa Valley C.E.R.T. Program suggests that graduates stay active in their pursuit of preparedness information & techniques needed to protect themselves, their families and neighbors.  We also strongly encourage untrained citizens to seek out as much information that they can get to start their foundation of disaster preparedness in the home.  We strongly suggest using the following "Self-Help" resources, which in many cases are an e-mail or phone call away and are usually free.

* F.E.M.A. distributes an excellent guide for disaster preparedness in the home.  It is titled "Are You Ready" A Guide to Citizen Preparedness (Publication H-34).  It covers a multitude of man-made, natural & technological disasters and how to prepare for them on many, simple levels. You can contact F.E.M.A. by phone at 1-800-480-2520 to order a single, free copy.

* F.E.M.A. provides a free, on-line course that reviews & explains many of the skills learned in the basic academy.  This course is titled Introduction to Community Emergency Response Teams - IS #317.  This serves as an excellent beginner course or a review course for past CERT graduates in any part of the country.  This course can only be accessed on the internet, not via phone ordering.

*   The National CERT Program operated by F.E.M.A. offers a Field Operations Guide (F.O.G.) similar to the one that all Napa Valley CERT graduates receive in their basic academy.  This item can be downloaded off the internet and is extremely beneficial to all CERT responders as an excellent reminder of field response assessment and response techniques.

*  The F.E.M.A. - C.E.R.T. program recognizes a publication as the national newsletter for all CERT participants.  This publication is titled "The Connection" and is authored by San Francisco Fire Department N.E.R.T. Program founding-father, Napa Valley CERT Advisor  and the president of North American emergency management (N.A.E.M.) Frank Lucier.  This newsletter provides valuable insight to what other CERT programs are doing nationally to meet their individual challenges.
